VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

Virgin Coconut Oil or VCO is a magic oil which is rich in fatty acids, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

Virgin Coconut Oil can be produced by two common methods:
Heated (Hot Methods) or dry processes
Non-Heated (Cold Methods) or Wet processes

Hot methods apply extreme pressure or high heat to extract the oil from the nut. Cold methods obtain oil without applying heat or pressing the coconut meat mechanically, hence the more common term “cold pressed”. Virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconut flesh without any chemical process or ingredients. The virgin coconut oil plant extracts virgin coconut oil from fresh coconut milk using cold processing technology through high speed centrifugal method. The virgin coconut oil extraction takes place through different steps, which includes coconut dehusking, deshelling, peeling (paring), disintegration, milk extraction and coconut oil extraction.
On an average 17 dehusked nuts weighing 400gms each with a maturity of 45-60 days would yield 1 liter of Virgin Coconut Oil.

Coconut milk is an emulsion of coconut oil and water which is stabilized by a protein. To recover the oil from the milk the protein bond has to be broken either by heating or by enzymes or by some mechanical means.


The most commonly used methods are by using heat also called hot process and by mechanical means also called cold process. We apply cold process method using high speed tubular centrifuge to help the coconut oil retain its natural healthy nutrients. When a coconut oil is cold pressed, the temperatures during the pressing process never exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold process produces best quality coconut oil with sweet coconut aroma if done in a 3 stage centrifuge process and also ensures longer shelf life. It contains antioxidants and phytosterols which counteract oxidation (spoilage) and excessive free-radical formation. Cold pressed

coconut oil is packed full of great natural healthy properties. It contains antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and is full of healthy short and medium chain fatty acids

VCO QUALITY QUADRANT

Referring to the VCO quality quadrant in Pic 1 the method which produces Virgin Coconut oil closest to Absolute Non Heated (ANH) method which is the ideal method is Centrifuge and Vacuum Evaporation. We have adopted the cold processed tubular centrifuge method for oil

separation which if done in a 3 stage process produces the finest quality VCO with minimal moisture value. This method retains all the natural properties of the product since there is no heat applied.

DESICCATED COCONUT POWDER

Desiccated Coconut Powder is obtained by drying ground or shredded coconut kernel after the removal of brown testa. Desiccated coconut is rich in healthy saturated fats with no cholesterol and is also a good source of dietary fiber. Lauric acid, the medium chain fatty acid from the fat of the coconut, is having antiviral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal properties. Capric acid, another of coconut’s fatty acid is also found to have antimicrobial properties. Coconut flour has been found in several studies to have a glycemic lowering effect, because coconut meat has simple carbohydrate content coupled with a high fiber, it yields a flour that is less disruptive to blood sugar levels. It is vegan and gluten free.
On an average 10 nuts would produce 1 Kg of Desiccated coconut powder.

Two methods of processing are generally used

We adopt Mechanical Pressing method for processing for recovering the maximum quantity of oil contained in copra which is more efficient and economical. On an average 1,000 nut weighing 400gms yields 150Kgs of copra out of which 66% of oil can be extracted and remaining 30% would be copra cake. Oil content in cake ranges from 8-10% and can be extracted using solvent extraction methods.
